Tributary
I experienced a severe ongoing artist block for years, managing only to create a few pieces that emerged with much internal struggle. My dear friend, JD, who was also an artist, wanted to help me push past my block. He continued to push me and find ways to inspire me. Finally, he arranged a painting party for me with friends, who were mostly non-artists, but simply loved and supported me. For the first time in years I felt free to create without inhibition. A tributary is a river or stream that flows into a larger body of water. I painted Tributary that night and my artist block dissolved forever.
JD passed away unexpectedly exactly two months after I created this painting. This abstract waterway has come to represent a tribute of artistry and freedom given to me by my beloved friend.

Break Into Light
Medium: Watercolor on paper
Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts 2022 selectee, GVSU Purchase Award Winner
When Black representation is included in the arts, it is often required to fit into a certain paradigm that feels “safe” to the majority culture. Break Into Light intends to reflect the tension of Black artists and storytellers living into the fullness of their creative expression in spaces that have yet to make them feel welcome.

Climbing Cerro Telica
Medium: Photograph
When I was traveling through Nicaragua leading community development trainings, my guide, Carlos, took me on a lovely day-trip to climb a volcano. He took to me a site that was lesser known, which he called Cerro Telica. As we climbed our own volcanic hill, I was able to capture these volcanic behemoths in the distance. The beauty was immeasurable.

Many Strands
Medium: Pencil on paper
I journeyed with a handful of faith leaders local to Grand Rapids over a period of two years, through a practice of theological reflection on issues of social justice. Most often we returned to the topics of race and antiracism, intent on moving our congregations from theory to concrete action. On the last day of this cohort’s official meeting, I began to mediate on how the great Creator knits and weaves our journeys together, without sacrificing who are created to be in the process.

Strife
Medium: Pencil on paper
After leading an intentional group discussion on injustice of the United States’ justice system and that system’s abuse of Black bodies, I found myself physically and emotionally drained. This piece emerged, where words failed me. It is order and chaos, creation and destruction, music and silence, and a search for hope.
